Default Drift Boat Anchor Question

Question.
Do I use a pyramid anchor? say 20lbs for my DB or could I just use a chain anchor? I see quite a few boats out there with chain. What is the best approach for our rivers under normal conditions?

Any advise appreciated!
Thanks!
Jason

Default best approach ..?

don't know. but... I use a chain. I fish rivers with a combo of wood and rock. Seems to me the chain would be more forgiving in wood with respect to hang-ups. So, that's what I went with.

I have used both and prefer a pyramid. You may find that 20# isn't going to be big enough at times.

I had a 30lb pyramid anchor and lost it on the Big Man along with a lot of rope. I now have some sections of heavy chain and it works well. Chain is less likely to get hung up in a log jam. I also do some plugging and its nice becouse the chain will drag easier when you want to move down 10 or so feet to work a run. I also finaly got smart and put a pully at the chain for my anchor rope and cut the weight in half.

the pyramid will hold you with shorter amout of rope out. but a chain will hang up alot less. after havin to cut your pyramid off because its hung up the fishin is about done for the day. i used 45 pounds to hold a 16' mirrocraft an unless the current is real heavy 20 foot of rope out usually does it. an if your doin a drop back with plugs a chain is what you want. an like it was said to cut the wieght of pulling up a heavy chain, tie the end of the rope to the front of the boat. then with a pully on the anchor bring the rope thru that then up thru the bow pully. this cuts your pulling wieght in half.

Default Chain......

After losing a circle hoop master for chain I took 30" of 3/8" re-rod bent it in a "V" and tac welded the chain to that,(25lb.) it is then adjustable by bending it out so all chain is dragging bottom, it is drag - not weight that stops you in current, in 15 years of using that style, I have not had a hang up or loss.

$50 ATV winch mounted to a stainless anchor roller does all my lifting. It's slow and noisy, but it works.
