Big Man Plug fishing
I just got a report from a guy who fished plugs in the Big Man 4th of July weekend and caught a nice silver 15 lb king and 2 summer run steelhead. I really wanted to get down there during august and give it a try when a few more fish show up. My source also said that there are a few salmon coming up the Little Man as well like they do every year in there this time. Does anyone else have a report from plug trolling in the Big Man that's recent?

Absoutely as hit and miss fishing as there is. You can go up there and have 2-3 good days in a row and then not see another fish caught for a week. Early fish are great when you hit them, but unless you are very lucky, or know exactly when and where to look odds are you won't get any fish.

they dont troll the plugs. anchor above the holes an drop back plugs, an hope for the best. get a plug retriever or you'll lose alot of them to snags. if your not fishin the snags you'll not find the fish.

Good Luck
Like said earlier, it is totally a hit or miss afair. The fish that come into the Little Man usually start showing in June and it's a trickle at best! We did research up in that area and we'd get 2 to 9 fish in a week of gill netting 200ft nets with a 5 hour soak time. So there are fish there however not that many. I would go for them after work and throw thundersticks and such off the lip and would get 2 in a great day and mostly 0 to 1 on average day. Some days they'd be active and rolling off the lip but most days there was no activity. Just wait for another month and you'll start seeing the early fall run and have much better activity.

Fish can be found if you know where to look. I'm more of a trout fisherman in the summer, but when I'm up on the NW rivers this time of year I always have some spinners and a heavier rod in the vehicle for the lucky days when you run into a pod. They can be found if you know the water, and follow the weather. It's just like deer hunting, know the weather patterns and the area and you can find fish.

Thanks guys, yeah I figured that it was definately a hit/miss situation. I was planning on trying plug fishing in late August once or twice before I go back to school. I mostly just want to try taking my boat on a river since I've never done it before and catching a fish running plugs would just be a bonus. It sounds like it would be a blast hooking a fresh fish right of the back of the boat in the current even more than catching them out in the lake.

Summer runs/early Kings....
The nice Male on the wall at the Crystal Cafe came from the Big M on Aug. 18 1997, on a plug, mid-day, bright and sunny !....freshets and dusk/dawn are peak activity when water is above prefered temp. range, fish the fastest water you can find, fish hard you'll get some fish, hit it right and you can wackem !.

I've seen that fish on the wall many times.
I hope to try some plug fishing for a change of pace this year while in the area.
Any suggestions on Plugs and color?
See ya at the Cefa

I havent heard of a Hot Shot S.E. before. Is that like a wiggle wart or a hot-n-tot type of plug? Has anyone ever ran J-plugs in the river? I talked to a friend that recently told me he had a buddy that casts j-plugs in the river and does really well for kings.

Hot Shot S.E.'s are are simular to the Wiggle wart of old, with a much larger search pattern, and less tuning required.
